Upstairs, Mom was sitting on the bottom bunk, rubbing El’s back.

“Elvis said you abandoned her on the stairs?”

Even though I knew it was ultimately my fault, that stung. “She wouldn’t come with us,” I said. “We tried. She wouldn’t move.”

“So you left your sister on the stairs? Alone. On a night like this?”

Even Rondo knew better than to say anything. Elvis was shuddering her nightmare shudder as Mom’s hand moved in a circular pattern, soothing her.

“How do you think she felt?” Mom asked.

“Not good,” I said. Terrified was more like it. The dim lighting and the creaky Ghost Stair. She was probably going to have nightmares for a week.

Mom shook her head at me. “Your dad and I had a lot to deal with tonight,” she said. “We needed you to step up and help out.” She sighed. “You’re in middle school now, Epic. You should know better.”

“I’m sorry, El,” I said. I really was. But I was also tired. In an electrical circuit, if there’s too much voltage, even a resistor can melt or catch fire. I was trying to step up and help, but to be honest, I was starting to feel a little melty on the edges.

Even in the barely there glow of the night-light, I could see my sister’s swollen red eyes blinking up at me.

“Sir Bentley didn’t do it,” she said with a frown. “She didn’t solve the crime.”
